As I sit here, penning this week’s column, my heart swells with the need to give a shout-out to Remembrance Sunday.
This event holds such deep meaning for countless people, as it’s a day when the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth come together to honour the incredible contributions of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and other conflicts.
Now, here’s a little tidbit that surprised even me: did you know that the significance of the poppy, that little red flower we see everywhere, was inspired by the World War One poem ‘In Flanders Fields’?
Yep, those opening lines are all about those resilient poppies that were the first to bloom amidst the battered soil of soldiers’ graves in Flanders, a region in Belgium.
Let’s take a moment to truly recognise and remember.
So many brave souls have given their all, paying the ultimate price, just so we can enjoy the freedoms and choices we have today.
It’s because of them that I’m able to openly share my views here (with the Editor’s approval, of course!).
So, let’s never forget their sacrifice and keep the spirit of Remembrance Sunday alive.
